happy birthday Jesus - now let's go see that hitler movie.

this is the year of the nazi. at first, i thought it was the year of the ghost, as tlc and discovery channel came out of the frigging box with shows about ghosts and hauntings. but no, now i've decided that hollywood thinks nazis are where its at.
from the litany of shows about the holocaust/hitler occultism/batshit nazi stuff to valkyrie and the boy in the striped pajamas, hollywood has cornered the market on making people remember tragedy during the holidays. yikes.

and now for something completely different...!

christmas with my family. WHEW.
for those who know all about it, rest assured that things are the same. oldest is still awesome, second oldest is still beyond repair, younger is happy not doing much and youngest is spoiled as hell. my dear aunt j and i decided that this year we would take over the whole Christmas menu and "sensationalize" by refusing to have a meat tray, a vegetable tray, and a cookie tray. we came up with the most fabulous assortment of dips, imported cheeses, baked ham with chutney and hummus that you have ever seen in your life. it was well recepted and i now have a few new staples to take to parties.
so invite me and i might bring rosemary cheese with figs. and no, that's not a metaphor for the newest street drug, you crazy kid.

we also gave 3x more to charity han we spent on gifts this year and that in and of itself makes me happy. in a world where so many have so little, it's nice to think that my contributions, however paltry, are making a difference for an evening. i was also able to procure a flawless present for h, my little, and i was overjoyed to see her happy face. it's so easy to forget, when you don't have any, that kids and christmas just go together.

and then you go to target and while you're looking for new earbuds, you pass the toy aisle and remember that you're glad it's not your turn for kids 'cause they're demons.

merry belated Christmas!
